📺 AI and Oprah

• ​Oprah recently announced a special interview with Bill Gates and Sam Altman from OpenAI. This is a pivotal moment that shows AI has entered the mainstream media. But this wouldn't be #TechTea if we didn't take a moment to talk about that lineup. When it comes to AI and the concerns around ethics and safety, as Pariss, founder of Black Tech Pipeline, pointed out, you would think Oprah would have included at least one person from the recent Rolling Stones interview, They Warned Us About AI, such as Timnit Gebru, Rumman Chowdhury, Safiya Noble, Seeta Peña Gangadharan, or Joy Buolamwini. But the lineup we get doesn't seem to have people focused on making this tech safe; if we're being real, it feels like this is a marketing campaign to make mainstream media feel ok with AI. And we're not the only ones who think this--Karla Ortiz created a thread on Twitter to fight the possible misinformation this special could spread.

☣️ Lack of safety with AI Images & Videos

• The latest advancements in Flux AI and Groke from X (aka Twitter) have made it clearer how much damage AI can cause if it's not rolled out with human protection in mind. X released their generative AI image creation tool without solid guardrails, and they quickly found out why the internet doesn't follow the saying, "With great power comes great responsibility."
• Flux AI's latest update has created incredibly realistic images and videos, making it harder to clock if it's AI-generated. And to no surprise, most of the test images you see online about this topic have been centered around women. Insert sarcastic tone, not concerning at all, right?

🥴 A New Startup, Manafisto, has dropped

• Founder Mode popped up over the Labor Day weekend after Paul Graham, founder of Y Combinator, dropped a blog post breaking down this new term. If you click that link and think, "I'm not reading all this," don't worry; Ben Lang shared the TL;DR one-page version so we can all quickly get up to speed. Now that we're all up to date, feel free to head over to the Tech by Choice Slack to drop the memes and talk about why this might not end well.
